Digital economy expert Don Tapscott: The future of Blockchain is neither pessimistic nor optimistic.
Digital economy expert Don Tapscott discusses the development prospects of Blockchain.
Don Tapscott, a well-known expert in the digital economy and blockchain field, recently gave an interview at a blockchain conference. This Canadian entrepreneur, who is over seventy years old, remains active at the forefront of the blockchain industry, not only writing books but also promoting blockchain consulting and research projects through his own research institute.
When talking about stablecoins, Don believes that all stablecoins have the potential to facilitate a global currency. He pointed out that the use of stablecoins in the payment sector is rapidly growing. However, regarding whether China's DCEP can become a global currency, Don is not as optimistic as is commonly seen domestically; instead, he is more favorable towards the global cryptocurrency called for by Bank of England Governor Mark Carney.
Don has an objective attitude towards regulation. On one hand, he criticizes the government's strict regulation of tokenized Blockchain, while on the other hand, he opposes the radical argument that "central banks should not get involved in Blockchain." When discussing Canada's Blockchain environment, Don believes that regulation is still hindering industry development, which is similar to the situation in the United States.
Looking ahead to the future of Blockchain, Don expressed neither optimism nor pessimism. He believes that Blockchain will not eradicate all problems but has given us an opportunity to make things better. Compared to the "revolutionary optimism" of many practitioners, Don leans more towards a rational optimistic attitude, affirming the industry's prospects while also respecting the forces of the "establishment." This may be the mindset that current Blockchain practitioners should learn.
The following is a selection of interview transcripts:
Don believes that the Chinese government's stance on blockchain is excellent, and every country should follow such practices and policies. He agrees that blockchain is a key technology for building an innovative economy.
When discussing China's legal digital currency, Don believes it should not attempt to become a global currency, which should be a global cryptocurrency that can replace the dollar hegemony as called for by Mark Carney. He pointed out that central banks need tools to enhance the transparency of economic operations in order to respond to potential crises.
Regarding the regulatory attitude of the U.S. government, Don believes this is a mistake. He calls for regulators to seek a balance between protecting investors and promoting innovation, rather than associating cryptocurrencies with crime. Don advocates for a collaborative approach to advance Blockchain development involving the government, private sector, NGOs, and other stakeholders.
Speaking about the situation in Canada, Don stated that the regulatory environment remains the primary obstacle to the industry's development, which is similar to the United States. He revealed that his research institute is collaborating with Chinese enterprises.
Don's research institute focuses on how Blockchain is changing 14 industries, including supply chain, finance, manufacturing, media, energy, and more. He believes that Blockchain has given us another opportunity to make things better, but he is neither optimistic nor pessimistic; instead, he emphasizes the need to continuously work to realize the potential of Blockchain.
